Pipit Fund, Inc. held its 1st Annual Fundraising Dinner-Dance at the newly-renovated Lincoln Community Center in Daly City, California. Attended by many eager partners in mission, the event was highlighted by native Filipino dancers, an exhibit of Pipit Fund and its various activities and a silent auction that provided funding for this year's programs.

  Scholarship Program

Our projects began 12 years ago with scholarships for needy youth in completing their education. In the Philippines, costs of tuition, books and uniforms can prevent many young people from pursuing an education. In Sucol and Masili barangays in Calamba, less than one in ten high school graduates go on to pursue a college education because of financial constraints. In 2003, we supported 28 high school scholars. As we incorporated that year as a non-profit we made a commitment to expand to fifty (50) scholars. In addition, we support the top two scholars to go on to college. In 2004, we sponsored 7 college scholars, and are looking into vocational school courses for non college bound youth.

Experience tells us one (1) college educated family member will support the advancement of the whole family, with subsequent ripple benefits to the community.  Supporting fifty (50) scholars and a number of those in either college or vocational pursuits will surely have an effect on the whole neighborhood. We cannot predict. We can only hope. We do know, however, that over a dozen of these scholars have volunteered at an after-school tutoring program and help run a church-based library. In 2004, we requested the scholars to begin a tree-planting campaign. Trees provide soil retention and prevent flooding during typhoons, provide shade and cooling, ease air pollution, provide habitat for wildlife, and family income supplement via fruit produce.
